Most people spend months thinking about laser hair removal before they actually book. They’ve done the basic research and know it works. What keeps them from committing is a set of specific questions that general “benefits of laser hair removal” content doesn’t answer: will it actually work for my hair color and skin tone, how much will it realistically cost, does the treatment hurt, what do I have to stop doing beforehand, and what does a full treatment course actually look like?
This post answers those questions specifically, including the ones most practices gloss over because the answers are occasionally “this might not work well for you.” At FACE/FIT, we use the InMode Triton system, one of the most versatile platforms available for treating multiple skin tones and hair types. We’ll explain where it performs best and where any laser system has limitations.

The First Question: Will It Work for Your Hair Color?
This is the most important question to answer before anything else, because laser hair removal has a genuine limitation that’s worth understanding clearly.
Laser energy targets melanin, the pigment in the hair shaft. The laser is absorbed by the melanin, converts to heat, and travels down to damage the follicle. For this to work, the hair needs to contain enough melanin for the laser to target.
Dark hair: The best candidates. Dark brown and black hair absorbs laser energy effectively across all three Triton wavelengths. Most patients with dark hair achieve 80 to 90 percent reduction over a complete treatment series.
Light brown hair: Responds to laser treatment but typically requires more sessions than darker hair and may not achieve the same degree of reduction. Setting this expectation at consultation avoids disappointment.
Blonde, red, grey, and white hair: These hair colors have insufficient melanin for the laser to target effectively. Laser hair removal is unlikely to produce significant results on these hair colors regardless of the device used. This is a fundamental physics limitation, not a device limitation, and no laser system currently overcomes it reliably. We tell patients this at consultation rather than take their money for a treatment that won’t work.
The Second Question: What About Your Skin Tone?
The skin tone question is where outdated information causes a lot of unnecessary hesitation, particularly for patients with medium to deep skin tones who’ve been told laser hair removal isn’t for them.
Older single-wavelength lasers carried real risk for patients with darker skin tones. The Alexandrite laser (755nm), which has high melanin absorption, is highly effective for light skin with dark hair but can cause burns, blistering, and permanent pigmentation changes in darker skin tones because the skin itself contains melanin that absorbs the energy alongside the hair.
The InMode Triton system changes this by combining three wavelengths: Alexandrite (755nm) for lighter skin tones, Diode (810nm) for a broad range, and Nd:YAG (1064nm) specifically for darker skin tones. The Nd:YAG wavelength has low melanin absorption at the skin surface level, which allows it to treat darker Fitzpatrick types IV through VI safely while still being absorbed effectively at the follicle.
In a diverse city like Houston, this matters for a significant portion of the population who’ve been incorrectly told laser hair removal isn’t for them. At your consultation, we assess your Fitzpatrick type, select the appropriate wavelength, and set the right energy parameters for your skin. We calibrate for your specific combination rather than using a one-size approach.
The Real Cost Calculation
The upfront cost of laser hair removal is the most common reason patients delay starting. Running the actual math against the lifetime cost of alternatives usually changes that calculation.
The average woman spends roughly $10,000 to $15,000 on hair removal over a lifetime between razors, shaving products, waxing appointments, and related skincare for ingrown hairs and irritation. This figure is typically higher in Houston where waxing salon prices and product costs are at or above the national average.
A complete laser hair removal series at FACE/FIT for a typical package of areas runs several hundred to a few thousand dollars depending on the areas treated. After that series, most patients require one or two brief maintenance sessions per year at a fraction of the original cost. The break-even point against ongoing waxing costs is typically two to four years for most patients, after which every year represents net savings.
The more practical framing for most patients: laser hair removal costs less per year than regular waxing once you account for the investment amortized over the years of maintenance-free results.

The Timing Question: When to Start and What to Stop
Two timing questions come up at almost every consultation.
When in the treatment cycle should you start?
The best time to start is when you can commit to the full series without a long sun exposure period interrupting it. Houston’s summer means significant UV exposure from March through October for most patients. Active tans change the skin’s melanin distribution and affect how the laser calibrates. This doesn’t mean you can’t treat during summer, but it requires consistent sun protection on treated areas and we’ll sometimes adjust energy settings to accommodate.
For patients with seasonal schedules, starting a series in fall for body areas allows several sessions before summer arrives. For facial areas that stay sun-protected year-round, timing is less critical.
What do you need to stop before starting?
Stop waxing, plucking, and threading at least four weeks before your first session and throughout the entire treatment course. These methods remove the hair shaft from the follicle, which is what the laser targets. Without the shaft, there’s nothing for the energy to travel down to the follicle. Shaving is fine and actually recommended because it preserves the follicle.
Stop self-tanner on the treatment area for two weeks before each session. Stop retinoids on the treatment area for a week before each session. Both affect how the skin responds to laser energy.
What a Full Treatment Course Actually Looks Like
Understanding the full picture before you start produces a better experience than being surprised by what each stage involves.
Session one: Your provider assesses your skin tone, hair color, and the areas you want treated, selects the appropriate wavelength settings, and performs the first treatment. You may notice some temporary redness and small bumps around treated follicles in the hours following, which is the normal inflammatory response confirming the follicles were targeted. This resolves within a day.
Between sessions: Hair in treated follicles sheds over the two to three weeks following each session, often in a way that looks like the hair is continuing to grow for a week before it pushes out. This is not regrowth, it’s shedding. Do not wax or pluck it. Shaving is fine.
Sessions two through six: Each session treats follicles in the active growth phase, which rotate across the treatment area on different cycles. This is why multiple sessions are necessary. Most patients notice progressive reduction, with the area looking noticeably sparser after sessions two and three.
Hormonal areas (upper lip, chin, bikini): These areas are driven by hormonal follicle stimulation, which continues activating dormant follicles even after treated ones are eliminated. Patients typically need more sessions in these areas and benefit from periodic maintenance sessions, particularly for chin hair if hormonal factors are active.
Body areas (legs, arms, underarms): Typically respond to six to eight sessions with longer-lasting results than hormonal areas.
The Honest Answer About Pain
InMode Triton incorporates a contact cooling system that significantly reduces discomfort compared to older laser systems. Most patients describe the sensation as a quick snap with warmth, similar to a rubber band flick, which varies by area.
The upper lip and bikini line are the most sensitive areas for most patients due to the concentration of nerve endings. The legs and arms are generally well-tolerated. Everyone’s tolerance is different.
Topical numbing cream is available if you’re concerned about a specific area. We apply it before treatment and it makes a meaningful difference in comfort for sensitive areas.
Why Provider and Technology Selection Matter
The quality of results depends on the device used and the expertise of the person calibrating it. Older single-wavelength devices produce inferior results for patients outside the narrow ideal skin and hair profile those devices were designed for. Providers who don’t properly assess Fitzpatrick type and adjust settings accordingly produce both poor results and potential adverse effects.
At FACE/FIT, laser hair removal is performed by trained providers who assess your specific skin tone and hair characteristics before every session and adjust calibration accordingly. The InMode Triton system’s three-wavelength capability allows us to treat every skin tone safely and effectively rather than limiting treatment to patients who fit a narrow profile.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many sessions will I need?
Most patients complete six to eight sessions for optimal results on most body areas. Hormonal areas including the chin, upper lip, and bikini typically require more sessions and occasional maintenance. We give you an estimate at your consultation based on the specific areas and your hair and skin characteristics.
Can I get laser hair removal while pregnant?
We don’t perform laser hair removal during pregnancy. Wait until after you’ve finished breastfeeding before beginning or resuming treatment.
What happens if I miss a session?
Missing a session doesn’t restart the process, but it does create a longer gap in the treatment cycle. Resume as soon as you’re able. The follicles that were ready for treatment during the missed session will cycle back around, though the overall timeline extends.
Can I treat multiple areas in the same session?
Yes, and we frequently combine areas in a single appointment. Full legs take about 30 to 45 minutes, underarms under 10 minutes, bikini line 15 to 20 minutes. Combining areas in a single appointment is efficient and common.
Is there anything that disqualifies someone from laser hair removal?
Active tan, recent significant sun exposure, very light or grey hair, certain photosensitizing medications, and active skin infections in the treatment area are all reasons to postpone or adjust treatment. Pregnancy is a contraindication. We review your health history and current skincare at consultation.
How long do results last?
Treated follicles don’t regenerate. The reduction achieved from a complete series is permanent for those specific follicles. Hormonal stimulation of new follicles means some areas, particularly on the face, benefit from annual maintenance. For body areas without significant hormonal influence, results are typically long-lasting with minimal or no maintenance needed.
