Masseter Botox in Houston, TX

Masseter Botox is one of those treatments with two very different types of patients. Some come in because they want a softer, more feminine jawline and don’t want surgery to get there. Others come in because they’ve been grinding their teeth for years, waking up with jaw pain and headaches, and their dentist keeps recommending a night guard that isn’t solving the problem.

Both groups leave happy. The treatment is the same, neurotoxin injected into the masseter muscles on either side of the jaw, but the result it delivers is genuinely meaningful in both directions. We see a lot of patients who came in for one reason and got relief from the other as a bonus.

What the Masseter Muscles Do and Why That Matters

The masseter is one of the strongest muscles in the body relative to its size. It runs along the lower jaw and is primarily responsible for chewing. When it’s overworked, from grinding, clenching, chewing gum, or just chronic stress, it enlarges. That enlargement does two things: it creates a square, wide, or heavy-looking lower face, and it creates significant functional problems including jaw pain, headaches, ear pain, and accelerated tooth wear.

Neurotoxin injected into the masseter temporarily reduces the muscle’s activity. Over four to six weeks, the muscle begins to shrink slightly, which slims the jawline visibly and, just as importantly, dramatically reduces the tension-related symptoms.

What to Expect

The treatment itself takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Your provider will palpate the masseter to assess muscle size and placement, then inject a predetermined number of units into the muscle on each side. The injection itself is a quick pinch — most patients find it far more comfortable than they anticipated.

The first few days: Mild tenderness at the injection site is common for a day or two. Avoid massaging the area, chewing gum, or eating very hard foods for the first few days.

Weeks two through four: The muscle begins to relax. TMJ and grinding patients often notice functional relief here before any visible change in the jaw shape.

Weeks four through six: Full aesthetic results become visible. The jawline appears softer and the muscle reduction is measurable.

How long it lasts: Results typically last four to six months. With consistent treatment over time many patients find the interval extends as the muscle gradually atrophies.

The Aesthetic Side — Jawline Slimming

For patients coming in for the aesthetic benefit, masseter Botox creates a softer, more oval facial contour by reducing the bulk of the lower jaw. The effect is subtle and gradual, you won’t see it immediately, but over six weeks the lower face becomes noticeably less square and heavy.

This is one of the few injectable treatments where results actually improve with consistent maintenance. Repeated treatments over time lead to more significant and longer-lasting muscle reduction as the masseter atrophies slightly with continued relaxation. Patients who’ve been doing this for two or three years often find they need treatment less frequently.

It’s worth being clear about what it doesn’t do: masseter Botox addresses muscle bulk, not bone structure or skin laxity. If the square jaw appearance is primarily skeletal, this treatment will improve it but won’t transform it. We’ll tell you that honestly in the consultation so your expectations are calibrated correctly.

The Functional Side — TMJ and Bruxism Relief

For patients dealing with jaw tension, teeth grinding, or TMJ disorder, masseter Botox is often genuinely life-changing in a way that’s hard to overstate. The muscle that’s been clenching constantly, during sleep, during stress, unconsciously throughout the day, stops working as hard.

The downstream effects are significant:
The morning jaw pain and tightness that patients have been managing for years typically resolves within a few weeks. Headaches that originate from jaw tension, often misidentified as tension headaches or migraines, frequently improve or disappear. Tooth wear slows. The grinding sound that’s been keeping partners awake at night goes away.

Night guards address the symptom (tooth protection) but not the cause. Masseter Botox addresses the cause. They’re not mutually exclusive, many of our patients use both, but for patients who’ve been relying solely on a night guard without relief, the injection is often the answer they’ve been looking for.

Masseter Botox is priced per unit at FACE/FIT. Because the masseter is a large, powerful muscle it typically requires more units than a forehead or crow's feet treatment; most patients need 20 to 40 units per side, though this varies based on muscle size and the degree of reduction you're looking for. We'll give you a clear unit estimate at your consultation.

Are You a Good Candidate?

Masseter Botox works well for most adults who are in good general health. It’s particularly well suited if you:

Have a noticeably square or heavy lower face and want a softer contour without surgery. Grind your teeth at night or clench during the day. Experience jaw tension, morning soreness, or tension headaches that originate from the jaw. Have been told you have TMJ disorder and haven’t found lasting relief from other approaches.

It’s not appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for patients with certain neuromuscular conditions. If you’re on medications that affect muscle function or blood clotting, let us know at your consultation.

One expectation to set clearly: the aesthetic results are gradual. Patients looking for an immediate jawline transformation will be disappointed; the slimming happens over weeks as the muscle reduces. If immediate contouring is the goal, we might also discuss whether chin filler or facial balancing would complement the masseter treatment.

Jaw pain, teeth grinding, or just ready for a softer jawline?

Both are good reasons to book a consultation. We’ll assess your masseter size, talk through your goals – aesthetic, functional, or both – and give you an honest picture of what to expect. No pressure, no overselling.
