Microneedling in Houston, TX
Real collagen stimulation, real results. Available with PRP or PDRN for patients who want more.
Microneedling works by doing something that sounds counterintuitive: creating controlled micro-injuries in the skin to trigger the body’s natural healing response. As the skin repairs those tiny channels, it produces new collagen and elastin, the structural proteins responsible for firmness, smoothness, and elasticity. The result is a gradual but genuine improvement in skin quality that gets better over weeks rather than peaking immediately after treatment.
It’s one of the more versatile treatments we offer because it addresses a meaningful range of concerns, from acne scarring and texture to general anti-aging and skin quality maintenance, and it can be performed on the face, neck, décolletage, and scalp. The addition of PRP or PDRN takes the collagen response further by introducing growth factors directly into the micro-channels while they’re open.
What Microneedling Treats
Microneedling is effective across a broader range of concerns than most single skin treatments.
Acne scarring: This is the concern microneedling addresses most dramatically. The controlled injury response breaks up the fibrous tissue that causes depressed scars and stimulates new collagen to fill them in over a series of treatments. For patients who’ve been self-conscious about acne scars for years, a properly executed microneedling series is often the first treatment that produces meaningful change.
Texture and enlarged pores: Surface roughness, orange-peel texture, and enlarged pores all respond to the collagen remodeling that microneedling stimulates. Results improve progressively across a series.
Fine lines and early signs of aging: By stimulating collagen production in the dermis, microneedling softens fine lines from within rather than filling them externally. It’s a longer-term investment than injectables but produces a different quality of improvement.
Uneven tone and sun damage: Microneedling accelerates cellular turnover and promotes more even melanin distribution over time. For mild pigmentation and sun damage, it’s often effective on its own or as part of a plan alongside other treatments.
Stretch marks: Microneedling on body areas with stretch marks stimulates the same collagen remodeling response. Results are gradual and require patience, but meaningful improvement is achievable with a treatment series.
Scalp and hair loss: Scalp microneedling stimulates blood flow and growth factors in the follicle environment and is used as an adjunct treatment for certain types of hair thinning. This is typically combined with PRP for the best outcome.
Skin quality maintenance: For patients without a specific concern who simply want to maintain healthy, firm, well-textured skin over time, a regular microneedling schedule is one of the most effective ongoing treatments available.
The Devices We Use
At FACE/FIT we use two professional microneedling devices, selected based on the treatment area and your specific goals.
SkinStylus: Our primary microneedling device, SkinStylus uses a rotary motor mechanism that delivers more consistent needle depth and speed than older oscillating motor devices. Consistent depth means more uniform collagen stimulation across the treatment area and more predictable results. It’s FDA-cleared and used by medical providers specifically for clinical-grade microneedling.
SkinPen: The first FDA-cleared microneedling device on the market, SkinPen has a well-established clinical record particularly for acne scarring. We use it in specific treatment contexts based on the area and goals being addressed.
Your provider will select the appropriate device for your treatment at your consultation.
Treatment Areas
Microneedling at FACE/FIT can be performed on:
Face: The most common treatment area, including forehead, cheeks, nose, chin, and the area around the eyes and mouth.
Neck: An often overlooked area where collagen stimulation produces meaningful improvements in texture, laxity, and the appearance of horizontal lines.
Décolletage: The chest area develops sun damage, crepey texture, and fine lines that respond well to a microneedling series.
Abdomen and body: Stretch marks and skin texture on body areas benefit from microneedling, typically requiring higher needle depths than facial treatment.
Scalp: Used for hair thinning protocols, typically combined with PRP.
What to Expect
Microneedling requires more preparation and aftercare than many skin treatments, and the results timeline is different from treatments like facials or DiamondGlow. Understanding this upfront makes for a better experience.
Before your appointment: Avoid retinoids and exfoliating actives for five to seven days. Do not use self-tanner or have active sun exposure for at least a week beforehand. Stop blood-thinning supplements (fish oil, vitamin E, aspirin) several days prior if you’re able. Arrive with clean skin.
The day of: A topical numbing cream is applied 20 to 30 minutes before treatment to ensure your comfort. The procedure itself takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on the areas treated. The sensation with numbing is a mild vibrating pressure. Some patients feel more sensitivity in certain areas, particularly the forehead and around the nose.
Immediately after: Your face will be red and may feel warm, similar to a moderate sunburn. Some patients have minor swelling, particularly around the eyes. This is a normal and expected inflammatory response. It’s the response that produces results, and suppressing it with anti-inflammatories post-treatment is counterproductive.
Days one through three: Redness subsides progressively. Your skin may feel tight and slightly rough as it heals. Keep your routine extremely simple during this period: gentle cleanser, a fragrance-free moisturizer, and mineral SPF. No actives, no retinoids, no exfoliation.
Days four through seven: The skin surface normalizes. Some patients experience mild flaking as the treated skin turns over. Do not pick or force this process.
Four to six weeks out: Collagen remodeling is underway and results begin to become visible. Skin texture improves, scars appear softer, and overall quality improves. This is the window where most patients notice the meaningful change.
How many sessions: For general skin quality and anti-aging maintenance, three sessions spaced four to six weeks apart is a standard recommendation. For acne scarring, four to six sessions is typically needed for significant improvement, depending on the depth and extent of the scarring. Results continue to improve for up to six months after your last session as collagen remodeling completes.
PRP and PDRN: The Enhancement Options
Microneedling alone produces real results. PRP and PDRN take that response significantly further by introducing bioactive factors directly into the skin while the micro-channels are open. Both options are worth understanding before your consultation.
PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) PRP is derived from your own blood. A small sample is drawn at your appointment, placed in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, and the resulting plasma is applied topically during your microneedling treatment so it enters the skin through the micro-channels. Platelets contain growth factors that accelerate healing, stimulate collagen production, and improve cell regeneration. The combination produces noticeably enhanced results compared to microneedling alone, particularly for acne scarring and overall skin quality.
PDRN (Polydeoxyribonucleotide) PDRN is a newer addition to the microneedling enhancement menu. It’s a regenerative compound derived from salmon DNA that activates tissue repair pathways and promotes cell regeneration at a deep level. PDRN has a strong clinical track record in wound healing and tissue repair, and its application in aesthetic microneedling is producing impressive results for skin quality, hydration, and overall renewal. For patients who prefer not to use their own blood or are looking for a different type of regenerative response, PDRN is an excellent alternative to PRP.
Which should you choose? PRP is the more established option with a longer clinical track record in aesthetics. PDRN is newer and produces a different type of regenerative response that some patients find more suitable for their goals. We’ll walk you through both at your consultation and give you an honest recommendation based on your skin and what you’re trying to achieve.
Pairing Microneedling With Other Treatments
Microneedling pairs well with several other treatments in a broader skin improvement plan.
Dermaplaning before microneedling: Dermaplaning a few days before your microneedling session clears vellus hair and surface buildup, allowing the needles to create cleaner channels and serums to absorb more effectively. This combination consistently produces better outcomes than microneedling alone.
Chemical peels between microneedling sessions: Alternating chemical peel sessions with microneedling addresses surface-level pigmentation and texture while microneedling works on deeper collagen remodeling. The two treatments work at different levels and complement each other well.
Scalp microneedling with PRP for hair: For patients with hair thinning, combining scalp microneedling with PRP creates a synergistic effect by stimulating follicle activity through both mechanical and growth factor pathways.
Is Microneedling Right for You?
Microneedling works for most adults across a wide range of skin tones and types. It’s particularly well suited for Fitzpatrick skin types III through VI who may not tolerate more aggressive laser or chemical treatments without risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
We’d recommend postponing or reconsidering treatment for patients with active acne breakouts in the treatment area, active rosacea flares, open wounds or skin infections, a history of keloid scarring, current isotretinoin use (wait six months after completing a course), or during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
A thorough consultation covers your complete skin history, current medications, and specific concerns before any treatment is planned.
