When to Book Botox and Filler Before the Holidays

The holidays are when a lot of people want to look rested and like themselves, and they’re also when it’s easiest to leave an appointment until the last minute. Botox and filler both need time to settle, and the week before an event is usually the wrong time to start.

This guide works back from your event date: how long neurotoxin and filler take to look their best, how much room a first-timer needs, and the aftercare that matters when your calendar is full of parties. If you’re new to Botox and want the basics first, start with our guide to why Botox is such a popular choice.

The Short Answer

Count back from the event, not forward from whenever you have a free afternoon. As a general guide:

  • Botox or another neurotoxin, first time: about four weeks before. That covers the two weeks it takes to settle, your two-week review and time for any touch-up to settle too.
  • Neurotoxin, returning patient: two to three weeks before.
  • Lip or dermal filler, returning patient: at least two weeks before, and three is more comfortable.
  • Filler, first time: about four weeks before, so swelling has fully settled and there’s room for your follow-up.
  • Both in one visit: plan around whichever needs longer.

These are planning guides, not promises. Everyone settles at a slightly different pace, and your provider can tell you what to expect for your own treatment.

Why Neurotoxin Needs About Two Weeks

Neurotoxins like Botox, Dysport, Xeomin and Daxxify relax the muscles that create expression lines. They don’t work the moment you leave. Botox and Xeomin usually start to show in three to five days, Dysport in two to three, and Daxxify in one to two. With most of them, the full result takes about ten to fourteen days.

That’s why first-time patients come back for a review at two weeks. It’s the first point where your provider can see the real result and decide whether a small touch-up would balance it. A touch-up then needs its own few days to show, which is where the extra room in a four-week plan comes from. Returning patients usually know how their face responds, so two to three weeks is normally enough.

Small bruises at injection points are possible and usually fade within a week. You can compare the options on our neurotoxin page or read more about Botox at FACE/FIT.

Why Filler Needs Room for Swelling and Bruising

Filler adds volume straight away, so the change is visible as soon as you sit up. What you see on day one isn’t the result, though. Swelling after lip filler usually peaks between 48 and 72 hours and settles over three to seven days, and bruising can take a week or two to fade. The lips you’ll actually have are the ones you see at about two weeks.

For a first treatment, that two-week mark is also when your follow-up visit happens. Allowing about four weeks means you’ll have seen the settled result, and had any adjustment, before the event. Other areas can behave a little differently, and your provider will tell you what to expect for yours. Learn more about lip filler and dermal fillers at FACE/FIT.

Working Back From This Year's Holidays

Here’s how that plays out on the calendar this year.

  • Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 26. Returning neurotoxin patients still have time if they’re treated in the first half of November. If you’re new to Botox or filler, a December event is the more realistic goal.
  • Christmas, Friday, December 25. First-time neurotoxin or filler by about late November. Returning patients by early to mid-December.
  • New Year’s Eve, Thursday, December 31. First-time treatment by early December. Returning patients by mid-December.

For a work party or a family photo session, count back from that date instead. It’s worth reserving your appointment as soon as you know your date, so the timing is yours rather than whatever’s left.

Aftercare That Matters When Your Calendar Is Full

A few aftercare points matter more than usual in party season.

After neurotoxin, skip the gym, alcohol and rubbing or massaging the area for 24 hours, and stay upright for four hours. An appointment on the morning of a party is a poor fit for that, even before you count the days it takes to work.

After filler, avoid strenuous exercise, heat such as saunas or hot yoga, and alcohol for 24 to 48 hours. Alcohol can make swelling and bruising worse, so don’t book the day before a dinner where you’ll be raising a glass.

If you get cold sores, tell your provider before lip filler. Treatment around the lips can trigger an outbreak, and an antiviral taken beforehand may be recommended. That’s one more reason to plan lip filler well ahead.

If Your Event Is Less Than Two Weeks Away

Book a consultation anyway, but go in open to waiting. Your provider can tell you honestly whether there’s enough time for what you have in mind, and if there isn’t, may suggest holding off until after the holidays.

If it’s your first time, waiting is usually the better call. A result that’s still settling, or a bruise you’re covering with concealer, isn’t what you want in the photos. January is a perfectly good time to start.

Making It Last Into the New Year

Timing it well has a bonus. Botox typically lasts three to four months, so a treatment in mid-November usually carries you through the holidays and into late winter. Daxxify can last around six months. Lip filler commonly lasts six to twelve months, so a well-timed holiday appointment often lasts well into next year.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far ahead should I book Botox before a holiday event?

About four weeks ahead if it’s your first time and two to three weeks if you’ve had it before. Most neurotoxins take about ten to fourteen days to reach their full result, and first-timers also need room for the two-week review and any touch-up.

It’s possible, but it isn’t ideal. Lip filler swelling usually settles over three to seven days, bruising can take a week or two to fade, and the settled result shows at about two weeks. If the event matters to you, give it at least two weeks, or about four if it’s your first time.

Daxxify usually starts to show in one to two days, which is faster than most neurotoxins. You still need to allow for the full result and for any bruising, so it doesn’t make a last-minute appointment risk free. Ask your provider whether it suits what you’re hoping for.

Avoid alcohol for 24 hours after neurotoxin and for 24 to 48 hours after filler, since it can make swelling and bruising worse. Plan your appointment so those hours don’t land on the night of the party.

Often, yes, if your provider thinks both suit your plan. Time the appointment around whichever treatment needs longer to settle, which is usually about four weeks for a first-timer.

Botox typically lasts three to four months, so a treatment in mid-November usually lasts into late winter. Daxxify can last around six months. How long it lasts for you depends on your dose, the area and how quickly your body breaks it down.
